Aviva Dunsiger lives by the mantra: "If they don't learn the way you teach, teach the way they learn." Anything less than achieving your greatest potential is just not acceptable to Dunsiger. Armed with a wide arsenal of strategies to motivate student communication and to extend their learning, Dunsiger remains determined to keep her students engaged.
Dunsiger maintains a strong relationship not just with her students, but with their parents as well. Every Sunday, she calls every parent and emails daily with links to videos and work they've completed that day. Dunsiger's students know exactly what to expect because she engages them to take ownership of their learning by having them clearly outline their learning goals and criteria for success.
- Dunsiger maintains an online community with her students through activities on Twitter and blogs. Students highlight their learning daily through videos and photos that they post online and are even able to participate in class from home.
- Dunsiger also uses a Livescribe pen to record and later share individual or group conferencing with her students and their parents. Planning sessions with her teaching partner are also recorded and shared online with administration, other teachers, students and parents.
- Dunsiger's students contribute to a web-based radio show where they discuss issues that are important to them. Parents and teachers are invited to listen and tweet questions and comments to the students. All students are involved in the show as they follow the production though an online backchannel called TodaysMeet and share their thinking as the show progresses.
Aviva is truly exceptional. She's incredible. She is a lifelong learner herself and that's what she wants for her students. As a testament to her truly exceptional skills and abilities, I have just one more comment. I wish my own two children were lucky enough to have her as a teacher.
Our daughter has always been a very quiet and shy girl. Miss Dunsiger has brought a significant level of comfort to her, where my daughter now shares her own ideas and openly communicates in classroom activities.
