- A job is the task at hand; it can pay the bills. A career is the labour of love.
- Any program we offer should reflect the needs of the industry.
Instituted aerospace technology program at school. The program, developed in conjunction with the aviation industry in Thompson, is the first in a Manitoba high school. Mr. Kreuger singlehandedly researched needs for this program, set up a related trade advisory council, designed and wrote all necessary proposals, located and secured all required finances and once approval was granted, spent the summer studying course content, and preparing lesson plans andhandouts.
Provides hands-on experience to students with an in-school auto repair shop, and includes field trips to auto shops, INCO plant, aviation hangars, and dealerships in community to show students scope of mechanics. Mr. Kreuger frequently illustrates a situation in class with incidents from his 16 years in the automobile industry.
Both the aviation course and the power mechanics course were developed in response to the pressing need for mechanics in the North. Mechanics raised in southern Canada tend not to stay.
The course prerequisites motivate students to excel: entrance into senior-level course is dependant on 75 percent average in earlier course and passing grades in English and mathematics. A broad range of students, both male and female, take the courses, and achieve a passing rate of 90 percent in grade 10 and 98 percent in grade 12. All go on to related job positions or college programs. Fellow teachers have their cars serviced at student-run school auto shop because of the quality of the work.
