Exemplary Practices showcases the thoughts, ideas and teaching practices of the 1999-2000 Certificate of Excellence recipients of the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence.
These 16 outstanding educators, who you will get to know in the following pages, met in Ottawa in May 2000 for three days of "best practice" sessions to share their knowledge and experience from the front lines of teaching in Canada.
The wide-ranging discussions centred on themes that reflect some of the most important issues in education today: evaluation and student results, employability skills, technology in the classroom, the role of parents in education and how teachers can help all of their students reach their full potential. For each of the sessions, two or three teachers launched the discussion with a short presentation outlining their views on the issue and their related experience. The discussions culminated in a session entitled "What's it all About?" in which the teachers attempted to sum up what being an educator means to them.
In the text that follows, you will read about many of the ideas, opinions and teaching practices that came out of the best practice sessions. Each article reports on one session and features the presenting teachers prominently, along with comments from others. You will also see boxes throughout the book highlighting particularly noteworthy teaching practices or achievements, along with personal and professional details about each of the Certificate of Excellence recipients, including information on how to get in touch with them.
At the back of the book are brief profiles of the 50 recipients of the Certificate of Achievement, who come from across Canada, more information about the Prime Minister's Awards program, and details on our generous corporate sponsors.
We at the Prime Minister's Awards program hope you find the 1999-2000 edition of Exemplary Practices a valuable resource. If you have any comments, please get in touch with the program office by phone 1 800 O-Canada (1-800-622-6232) or email.
