Welcome
The Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence program celebrated its 10th anniversary in May 2003. In its first decade, the program has recognized more than 1000 outstanding elementary and secondary teachers from all of Canada's provinces and territories, from schools large and small, in cities and towns and rural and remote areas.
Starting with awards for science, technology and mathematics teachers, the program now honours educators in all disciplines. The 2002-2003 recipients range from a Grade 1 teacher in Vancouver to a multicourse high school teacher in Nunavut to a Grade 5 French immersion teacher in Nova Scotia. These exemplary educators were chosen from among more than 250 applicants.
The Certificate of Excellence recipients came to Ottawa in May 2003 to receive their award certificates from the Prime Minister and for three days of "best practices" sessions. At these gatherings, they had a chance to get to know their fellow recipients and share their award-winning ideas and innovative teaching practices.
This publication flows from those lively and fascinating discussions. In the pages that follow, you will find biographical information about the recipients, along with their thoughts on some of the issues and challenges in education today, and plenty of ideas for activities that you can adapt to your school and students. There is also contact information for each teacher should you wish to get in touch with him or her directly.
Does reading about these teachers remind you of an exemplary teacher in your school or community who would deserve this award? You will find more information about the program and how to nominate a special teacher on this website - About the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence. The nomination form and guidelines are usually distributed and posted on the website in the fall.
